IT is well established that placebos induce a significant response when patients are unaware that they are receiving a placebo as opposed to a pharmacologically active substance in double blind, placebo-controlled clinical trials. However, what is not known so well is the mechanisrn(s) by which placebos exert their effects. Patients' expectations for improvement, also referred to as 'response expectancies', are thought to be one of the central mechanisms responsible for placebo effects. While this concept appears to be reasonable it does not explain actually how response expectancies occur.
