The recent American Diabetes Associations (ADA) 68th Scientific Sessions held in San Francisco examined whether intensive glycaemic control reduces cardiovascular events in patients with established type 2 diabetes. Patients with type 2 diabetes are at an increased risk of cardiovascular events compared to people without diabetes, even after accounting for traditional cardiovascular risk factors such as smoking, hypertension and dyslipidaemia. Although cholesterol and blood pressure lowering trials have clearly demonstrated a cardiovascular benefit in patients with type 2 diabetes, the effects of intensive glucose control have remained uncertain.
