Officials discuss moving nurseries north of the citrus belt. If citrus canker is a crisis for Florida's commercial citrus growers, it's been a catastrophe that will transform the state's citrus nurseries. The explosion of the bacterial disease since the 2004 hurricanes has destroyed eight of the state's largest citrus nurseries that account for 65 percent of the state's stock of new trees. That includes heavyweights such as Southern Citrus in Dundee, Roland Dilley and Son Inc. of Avon Park and Ben Hill Griffin Inc. in Frostproof. The list also includes other nurseries, such as Reed Bros. Citrus in Dundee, which have been put under quarantine because of their proximity to canker infections, even if the disease hasn't been found there. That puts themout of business because quarantine prevents movement of trees outside the quarantine area, said owner Chuck Reed.
