One of the facts that I find so difficult to accept is knowing that so much of our camellia history and heritage has already been irretrievably lost. Varieties that were once loved have been lost forever, and knowledge about so many camellias have faded from consciousness. Sometimes, it seems to me that we have lost a language that was once spoken so fluently throughout our camellia gardens of the past. The value of the tried and true older varieties is often replaced with latest and greatest new thing to come along. Each year as I wander through the old camellia collections in Savannah, I discover so much of our forgotten history. My hope is to keep as much as possible front and center where it always needs to be.
