摘要

January of 1865 in extreme northwestern Alabama must have seemed as warm as a gentle spring to the men of the 88th Illinois volunteer infantry. It made a lasting impression on young John M. Green.Upon his return to Chicago in June of 1865, he told friends and family how impressed he was with the Alabama terrain and climate. Serving as Chairman of the Cook County Commission, shortly before the famed Columbia Exposition, he apparently became wearyof Illinois poli-tics and it became a real desire of John Green to return to Alabama.
