Not long ago, fellow garden writer Debra Prinzing gave me a copy of her new book Slow Flowers, a visual account of her transition from using "fast-food-style" flowers (those mass-produced and flown in from faraway lands) in arrangements to using blooms and materials purchased from local growers or found in her garden. It was an eye-opening experience. Debra's approach inspired me to rethink my own "arrangement philosophy" and to focus more on the value of a sustainable bouquet. Page by page, I discovered ideas and techniques that I could use at home. Even the artistically challenged, such as myself, can make something beautiful from locally grown flowers and backyard herbs.
