For about 20 years, Rick and Gail De Wachter of the Otterville area were tobacco growers, at the high point of their production, growing just over one hundred acres of the golden leaf. But, a few years ago, the De Wachters decided it was time for achange. They left tobacco and decided to try seed breeding, producing high quality rye seed for the domestic and export export. This past season, the couple decided to try something new, branching out into chick peas and mung beans. Chick peas, also known as garbonzo beans, are a cool season plant native to the Middle East. The plant is best suited to light textured, sandy soils and is considered the world's third major pulse crop for both human and livestock consumption. It is very high in protein andcan be consumed fresh as a salad item or boiled. roasted, canned or ground into flour. There are two main groupings of chick peas: kabuli and desi. Kabuli chick peas are large seeded and require 100 to 110 days to mature. They have a cream to white coloured hull and make up about 10 to 15 per cent of world production. Desi chick peas are small seeded and require 95 to 105 days to mature. The seeds are wrinkled and irregular in shape and make up 85 to 90 per cent of world production.
