Despite declining domestic and global tobacco consumption, Ontario's tobacco industry remains one of the most stable in the land, according to Dr. Larry Martin, CEO of the George Morris Centre. However, it will continue to shrink unless export contracts can be gained in the few markets where consumption is growing. Martin presented the results generated by the independent business analysis group at the annual Tobacco Field Day, held at the Delhi Research Station, in July. Citing a 1999 industry study that identified the export market as the only real area of growth for Ontario producers, Martin said China and Russia are the only two markets in the world where tobacco consumption is growing to any significant degree. In other countries, such as theUnited States, India, Japan, The Netherlands and Canada, consumption curves are flat or declining.
