On 4 September 2008, we visited Chedington Woods, on the Somerset/Dorset border, to look for larvae of Cloaked Pug Eupthecia abietaria. There had been records of adults in various parts of the woodland complex since 2007 so it seemed very likely the moth was resident there. Skinner (2009. Colour Identification Guide to Moths of the British Isles 3rd edition: 57) states that larvae are found in the cones of Norway Spruce Picea abies, Sitka Spruce P. sitchensis, Noble Fir Abies procera and Silver Fir Aalba. He does not indicate whether fresh green or old brown cones are used.
