On 16 June 2012, on our way home from a week in the Burren, County Clare, we stopped at an interesting-looking area 2km west of Gort, Co. Galway (VC HI5). The habitat comprised grazed grassland, turloughs, scattered bare rock and scrub including plenty of stunted Buckthorn Rhammis cathartica. We did some beating for larvae and it was not long before BPH had beaten two larvae of Odontognophos dumetata from one of these bushes (Plate 1). We spent about an hour beating further bushes, but no more were found. The larvae were at a much lower density than we had noted in the Burren National Park at Cooloorta Lough, Co. Clare (VC H9), earlier in the week. There was much less bare limestone at this new site than at Cooloorta and we wonder if the lower density of larvae is related to the much smaller area of bare rock on which the adult moth can rest cryptically?
