A new national agency to provide world-class measurement standards and services to Australian industry was announced by the Federal Industry Minister, the Hon Ian Macfarlane MP on 13 May 2003. The National Measurement Institute [NMI] will have responsibility for national functions in physical chemical and biological measurement. The new institute will be formed by amalgamating the National Measurement Laboratory, a national facility in CSIRO, the National Standards Commission and the Australian Government Analytical Laboratories.
