Factors to consider when defining acceptable stocking levels for conifer regeneration in continuous cover forestry

The aim of this paper is to describe the factors that need to be considered when deciding what stocking density is acceptable for regeneration in a stand managed under Continuous Cover Forestry (CCF). To achieve this we have critically evaluated the information and guidance available in Britain and a range of other countries with similar forest conditions. In general guidance is limited and in many cases lacks a scientific basis. The main factor to consider when defining acceptable stocking densitiesfor regeneration is the desired stand structure, as set out in the management objectives. The pattern and timing of regeneration will need to be different between a 'simple1 structure, which has one or two canopy layers, and a 'complex1 structure, whichhas three or more canopy layers. The main finding of this study is that if producing high quality timber is an objective, the current guidance in Britain (2000 saplings ha~(-1)) in a simple structure may compromise timber quality if the target is just reached and distribution is patchy. Revised guidance is proposed.
