Jonathan Allison describes the ups and downs of restoring and maintaining his family's small estate woodland under continuous cover management. Continuous cover forestry (CCF) has as one of its principal objectives the production of commercial timber,timber that is long enough, straight enough and wide enough to be transported to a sawmill with a reasonable chance of a profit. Consequently the woodland has to be on a reasonable gradient and enjoy soil and climatic conditions that grow the trees well.
