Walnut hybrids in the UK: fastgrowing quality hardwoods.

A field trial was established in 2003 in Paradise Wood experimental woodland in South Oxfordshire to evaluate five walnut (Juglans regia) hybrid varieties: NG23, NG38 and MJ209 from France, Bressanvido from Italy, and IRTA X-80 from Spain. The walnut trees were planted with Italian alder (Alnus cordata) to provide optimum architectural compatibility and for nitrogen fixation, silver birch (Betula pendula) for rapid establishment and shelter, and wild cherry (Prunus avium) as a companion timber species. Walnut tree height was measured to the highest live bud at planting time, and at the end of each growing season. Survival was highly variable between hybrids. The survival percentage during the first year was the same after five years, except for IRTA X-80, which showed very poor survival thus, was excluded from the growth analysis. Walnut height growth was poor during the first four years, except for NG38, which appeared to establish well, even after one year. Height growth of NG38 was poor, growing only 31 cm in four years. Variance analysis of height increment showed highly significant variation between hybrids. Hybrids NG23, NG38 and MJ209 grew better than Bressanvido. NG38 trees significantly grew more than NG23 and Bressanvido trees. At the end of 2008, the height of NG38, NG23 and MJ209 trees was 3.18, 2.9 and 1.54 m, respectively. It was postulated that in the first four years of growth, the walnuts were investing in root, rather than shoot growth, and once the root to shoot ratio was in balance, the trees put on the top growth, as indicated by the fifth year increment results. The hybrid walnuts may be used for short rotation forestry systems.
