GASOLINE PRICES BOTH ARE A PERENNIAL SOURCE of public policy controversy and present an interesting context for economists to examine general questions involving pricing dynamics and dispersion. In late 2006, the JIE received a set of high quality, complementary papers that investigate these questions. In response, the editorial board decided to create a symposium around these papers; in this issue, we publish this symposium.
