This paper describes the results of a two-year study examining the use of sixty nest boxes by red squirrels (Sciurus vulgaris) within a small (244ha) commercial conifer plantation on the island of Anglesey, North Wales. Nest boxes revealed the presence of nesting red squirrels within stands and also confirmed the absence of grey squirrels. During the first year of study, seasonal rates of nest box occupation were relatively low at 2-22%, whilst rates of use increased markedly (33-50%) during the second year. Box inspections provided modest amounts of data on red squirrel mortality and reproduction. The long-term value of boxes as a tool for monitoring red squirrel populations is discussed for commercial conifer plantations, with particular reference to epidemic disease outbreaks.
