摘要

'Better Trees, Better Profit' is the -title of this year's RFS N.D.G. James Memorial Event taking place at RASE in March. To whet your appetite for the conference, Professor Jeff Burley discusses the current status of tree improvement. At the dawn ofthe third millennium, agriculture was in turmoil over the issue of genetic modification (GM) of plants. Field trials were uprooted while laboratories, greenhouses and offices (sometimes the wrong ones) were invaded by environmental activists; political lobbying campaigns against GM were launched; and, in 2003, a National Debate was initiated in which local groups were encouraged to organize public discussion meetings and individuals were invited to answer questionnaires from which the Government would allegedly obtain guidance on its policy with regard to the growing and sale of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and their products.
