Eighteen years ago Philip Adlard and his family bought a small wood. He now looks back at what it has cost to bring this one privately-owned wood into sustainable management. Every wood is different, so the time and work required by an owner on acquiring a wood to bring it into sustainable management will depend on its initial stale. In this case study, based on Queen's Wood, Southam, near Cheltenham in Gloucestershire, it has taken 15 years since purchase in 1985 to approach a satisfactory condition.
