In the third of our articles from the Tree Diseases conference, Colin Price attempts to put a figure on the economic cost of tree diseases in the UK. The economic impacts of it all, that is the unambitious title that the organisers of the conference bestowed upon me - and I thank them for it. They no doubt hoped that at the end of my presentation I would have been able to say, for example: "tree diseases cost Britain 171.7 pound million per year, give or take 50,000. pound" The task looked like a short straw dipping into a poisoned chalice. I am not a tree pathologist; as a forest economist, I have not made tree diseases my special subject. The organisers wanted an expert, but none was forthcoming, so they asked me instead. I can only review how aneconomist might approach costing tree diseases, and supply illustrative figures - not definitive or closely-researched ones - for the extent and severity of the problem.
