In the year in which the RFS Whole Society Meeting visited Northern Ireland Sian Atkinson describes the methods and findings of the recently completed survey of ancient woodland in the province. From the rolling drumlins of Down and Armagh, topped with a patchwork of small farms, to the dramatic basaltic plateau of the Antrim coast, the misty lakeland of Fermanagh, and the secret, hidden valleys of the Sperrins, Northern Ireland is not short of beautiful countryside. But although it is famously green, this landscape lacks woodland. Leafy overgrown hedgerows may give the impression of tree cover, but in fact, Northern Ireland is the least wooded country in Europe, with the exception of Iceland. It has only 6% woodland cover, the majority of which isrecent commercial conifer plantation.
