摘要

Although the end of the calendar year may be embedded in our minds as the "season of giving," most colleges and universities operate on a fiscal-year cycle that ends each June. Thus, at this time of year, appeals go out from our alma maters, soliciting donations to the annual giving fund. No doubt, each of us receives many such appeals each year from various local, national, and even international charities and nonprofit organizations, making it difficult to decide if and what we will give. We may ignore the many appeals for a variety of reasons: "Money is tight right now," "I have to pay my daughter's tuition bill for next year," or "We have a family vacation we're saving for." Or the appeals simply end up at the bottom of the piles on our desks or in the trash. As quickly as our reasons for not giving come to mind, I want to focus on why we should give. When I speak with nurse educators, I often hear lamentations about the changes and pressures that have occurred in nursing and health care-the perennial concerns about rising expectations, workload, and tight budgets. These are all very real and legitimate issues. Nevertheless, I think we also let them overshadow the fact that nurse educators, and nurses in general, have not been affected by the serious economic downturns that are being felt by many in the United States and around the globe, where competition, technological advances, and "off-shoring" have drastically limited, or even eliminated, opportunities in a number of job categories. Instead, job opportunities abound in our profession, and most of us have the luxury of being at least somewhat selective in where we choose to work. In addition, we are earning salaries and benefits that substantially exceed individual median income levels (approximately dollar35,691 in 2006). This is not to say that we, as nurse educators, and our families don't face economic challenges, but simply that as a professional group, we are far better off economically than many of our fellow Americans.
