This article examines the role of dopamine release in the medial preoptic area (mPOA) of the brain in the Japanese quail, and shows how studying species other than mammals can provide important information about how different aspects of sexual behavior are regulated. This group has been using the quail for many years and their previous work has provided important information on how androgens, their metabolites, and dopamine regulate male sexual behavior. In this article, the investigators focused on sexual motivation. Copulation between quails is different from mammals, as the male lacks a penis and thus, no erections or intromissions can occur. Nevertheless, these birds show rigorous sexual behavior. These birds copulate by the male mounting the female and contacting his cloaca to hers; thus, the authors suggest that copulation in this species does not involve the normal neuro-muscular contractions that occur in mammals. In this study, dopamine release from the mPOA was measured with a microdialysis probe. All animals were habituated to the surroundings and all showed copulatory behavior during a pretest. The
