Steel product exports by 7 major domestic general trading companies totaled 6,544,000 tons in 2002, down 13.3 percent, or 1 million tons, from 7,540,000 tons recorded for the previous year. It is not only because of the deterioration of export environments resulted from strong domestic demand for steel products, but also because of steelmakers change in export strategy toward the increase in their direct exports as well as the diversification of export channels. Taking a closer look at those general trading firms export performance for 2002, decrease rate of such items as section, hot-rolled coil, steel pipe, steel wire and semi-finished products, all of which have a great portion of weight in entire exports of steel products, was analyzed to have sharply dropped.
