Production of domestic plates began to get normalized in May, marking a 12.5 percent surge from April when the monthly output relatively declined due the large-scale facility repair works both at POSCO and Dongkuk Steel. According to a recent survey conducted by the Korea Metal Journal, the combined monthly plate production by the two plate makers in May reached 388,000 tons, while their plate sales stood at 384,000 tons. By company, POSCO produced 177,000 tons of plates in May, up 0.6 percent from a month ago, but down 40.6 percent from a year earlier due to its facility repair works. If the related plate mill had been operated at a normal pace last month, POSCO's monthly output could have recorded about 300,000 tons. Dongkuk Steel turned out 211,000 tons of plates in May, up 24.9 percent from a month ago and a surge of 11.6 percent from a year earlier. Dongkuk Steel maintained its normal production of plates in May, thus marking a relative growth from April when the company conducted large-scale facility repair works.
