In a recent meta-analysis of 7 studies, 6 of which were retrospective, Sakhuja et al analyzed the effect of implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICDs) on mortality in patients who were undergoing dialysis. The investigators compared 3.5% of the study population who were on dialysis with the 96.5% who were not and concluded that there was a two- to threefold increase in mortality in ICD recipients receiving dialysis therapy compared with those who were not receiving dialysis.
