摘要

basic and continuing challenge is how to bring a major part of Ontario's productive forest under sustainable management for the many products and values it can provide. The prime factors affecting change have been: society's views on forests and forestry; education, technology and the global marketplace. Fifty years ago most foresters considered themselves environmentalists and, indeed, were looked upon in that role by the society of the day. During the past decades self-styled "environmentalists" and non-foresters for various reasons have convinced many in society that they have the correct approach to our forests, largely based on an incomplete knowledge of the forest and its management. Thus foresters have had to better communicate both with thepublic and specific interest groups. This has been a major challenge because of the combination of emotionally-charged issues and the inability of many foresters to articulate their position in an easily comprehended way.
