摘要

This paper describes two pilot document delivery projects undertaken recently at Miami University of Ohio. The first pilot was conducted in conjunction with the Mathematics/Statistics Department. The second pilot, which involves all of the Science Departments, is currently midway through the projected test period of two years. Both pilot projects were developed to introduce faculty to the delivery of electronic table of contents and document delivery services. Our customer profiles, which can generate either table of contents or matches on keywords or author names, and the delivery of the documents, have been provided in a mediated environment. Library staff design and input the profiles and order the documents. This has afforded us the opportunity to talk often with our customers and observe their reactions to the projects. As a result, the service has become an expansion of reference services. Although the primary goal of both projects initially was, and still is, to encourage faculty acceptance of such services as a replacement for selected journal subscriptions, the obvious value of the services, as current awareness tools, has added a new perspective to our expectations of how the current project will grow and develop. It also ties in very nicely with our overall initiative of rethinking our reference services and our efforts to reach more of our remote and infrequent customers.
