Welcome to the first installment of Nexus. This column will be a place for considering timely issues in libraries from both the technical services and reference points of view. Over my career, I've worked in reference and technical services for roughly equal amounts of time, in both public and academic libraries. My tendency is to see the similarities among types of libraries and departments, not the differences. For this first column, I will try to illustrate some of the technical services issues and considerations that accompany a request from our reference librarians to switch from print to online subscriptions. I hope this column will lead to an ongoing conversation between the "onstage" and "back-of-the-house" librarians, and I welcome your ideas, suggestions, and reactions.
