The reference desk that the Alliance Virtual Library operates in the virtualworld of Second Life has no ready equivalent to any traditional deskbecause of one major factor: our staff is not paid for their efforts. Althoughpublic and community libraries have long used volunteers in a variety oftasks, it is not common to have the reference staff composed of volunteers.
