As roaring yellow machines lower 36-inch-diameter pipeline into a deep, muddy trench, a casual observer might think there is little to it-just swing, drop, and cover it up. Think again. In fact, so much is going on with the new Guardian Pipeline project (www.guardianpipeline.com), which is owned equally by CMS Energy, WICOR, and Viking Gas Transmission, that it takes more than 700 fulltime crew members working on various stages of the project just to keep things going. With all the digging and tunneling and grading and earth-moving and heavy lifting going on, it all appears to be rough work without much attention paid to tight tolerances. But some of the most important work on the project is the most delicate-the welding and prep of the pipeline itself.
