摘要

FORMERLY called Siam, Thailand is well-known for many reasons. Centrally located in Southeast Asia, its culture is a blend of regional customs, traditions, and religions. Yet, despite its ability to adapt to outside influences, it has the distinction of being the only country in the region that never fell to a Western power during the colonial era. It's famous for its national sport, muay Thai (Thai boxing), a martial art in which the combatants use feet, fists, elbows, and knees. At the other extreme, its people are known for their friendliness, hospitality, and laissez-faire attitudes. Its cuisine is known for its visual impact - in fact, Thai food sometimes is prepared as much for appearance as it is for taste. Its nightlife long ago earned Bangkok its nickname, "The Paris of the East." And for three days in October, it will be known as the home of Tube Southeast Asia.
