Welding arcs are so bright that it is almost impossible to study the flow of molten metal during welding or the interaction among the arc, electrode, and workpiece, Oxford Lasers has responded to this by developing VisiWeld, an imaging system that allows users to see through the fireball and look at the welding process. The company says the system can see and record close-up images of the weld process in an area as small as 10 mm by 10 mm and can capture transient effects or events that last as little as 1 ms.
