Determination of Dietary Cassava Root MeaS Toxicity in Broiler Chicks

Sixty day old unsexed Hybro broiler chicks were used and allotted randomly to 4 treatments of 3 replicates of 5 chicks each. The experimental rations were formulated to be isocaloric (3.000 Meal Me/kg) and isonitrogenous (22%). Cassava root meal (CRM)replaced sorghum (60% of ration) in the rations 0, 20,40 and 60% in the test diets. The feeding period continued for 6 weeks, thereafter, test diets were withdrawn and replaced by the control diet for a recovery period of 2 weeks recovery period. No significant changes were observed in the levels of serum constituents: total protein, albumin, globulin and uric acid and the activities of alkaline phosphatase, aspartate aminotranferase in this experiment. Similar results were receded in haematological parameters during the feeding and recovery periods except for Hb values where treatment effect was significant (P>0.05) during the feeding period and the value in group 2 (7.45+43) was the lowest of the treatment groups. Varying degrees of vital organopathies were seen. These slight changes were reduced at the end of the recovery period. No apparent digestive or ill health effects were observed at all feeding levels of replacement. It was suggested that feeding CRM at all levels set in this experiment produced no toxic effects.
