The fertility of semen stallion stored for 24 h using a new protocol (INRA 96 diluent; 15鳦; aerobic conditions) was compared with that of semen stored under the standard protocol (INRA 82 or Kenney's diluent; 4? anaerobic conditions). INRA 96 consisted of a chemically defined milk-free diluent. 12 stallions and 203 mares (351 cycles) were used in 4 breeding trials. Pregnancy rate was higher for the new than for the standard protocol (57 vs. 40%; P<0.001). A further experiment was conducted to determine the influence of storage time on fertility. Semen from 2 stallions was diluted in INRA 96 and inseminated immediately (50 cycles) or after storage for 72 h at 15?(52 cycles). For the 2 treatments, fertility averaged 68 and 48% respectively (P<0.001).
