摘要

Black shank disease is a major contributor to crop loss for US tobacco growers. Some years are worse than others, but it remains a serious concern. A university plant breeder and graduate student believe their gene research will lead to better black shank resistance. In fact, the disease caused an average of about 3 per cent in overall loss in the past five years, with some fields suffering up to a 100 per cent loss in years of major infection. Over the last five years, black shank caused an averageloss of USD 20.7 million ( EUR 16.4 million), according to the North Carolina State University (NCSU) Flue-Cured Tobacco Disease Report. Some international growers and researchers may say, "Well, black shank is not our major concern." Indirectly, though, the disease does impact them. "It affects the international market, because disease affects the cost of production in the United States," says Ramsey Lewis, an NCSU plant breeder.
