This column is dedicated to the memory of Fred Hooven, who worked with me at Ford Motor Co. during Ford's radialization program in the 1960s. Fred was the inventor of the aircraft radio direction finder and computer for radar-directed aircraft bomb sights used in World War II. Upon graduating from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he was also involved in aeronautical engineering, but most of his career was spent in mechanical and electronic engineering. Fred became interested in my road/tire/vehicle/driver system engineering and development concept at Ford, a then-new approach that I had first used for the application of low section-height bias-ply tires for the 1964 Lincoln and Thunderbird, and later for the application of radial-ply tires on the Lincoln Continental Mk III. He had been with Ford for several years as special assistant to Ford Division General Manager Don Frey, who authorized the Ford radialization program in which I also played a key role.
