"L'isola felice del Casone Tioxide" (the happy island of Tioxide at Scarlino-Casone) - that was the headline in La Nazione (the Florence-based newspaper, 27 January 2009). The newspaper went on to report that Huntsman Corp. was planning to cut its global workforce by 9% during 2009 and that the Grimsby-Pyewipe (UK) plant would close down at the end of March. (See also TiO2 Worldwide Update, Nov/Dec 2008, pages 25-26). Also during January, fears were being expressed in the local French and Spanish press that Huntsman's TiO2 plants at Calais and Huelva might be permanently shut down. But, because of its relatively good cost position within the Huntsman group, production at the Scarlino plant was going to be stepped up again.
