A field experiment was conducted to find out suitable cropping systems and also to study the impact of different preceding crops on the yield and quality of succeeding tobacco in Northern Light Soils (NLS) of Andhra Pradesh. The experiment with seventobacco based cropping systems viz., sesame (Sesamum indicum L.)- tobacco - groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.); maize for cobs (Zea mays L.)-tobacco-groundnut; black gram - tobacco -sesame; groundnut - tobacco - water melon (relay); sunflower - tobacco - summer vegetables (ridge gourd and cucurbits); soybean (Glycine max (L.) -Merr)- tobacco- fodder sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L) Moench); groundnut-tobacco- fodder sorghum were compared with sunnhemp green manuring -tobacco, in a replicated field trial. It was found that maize - tobacco - groundnut was superior followed by groundnut-tobacco- water melon (relay) in terms of gross returns, net returns and tobacco equivalents in NLS. Tobacco yields were adversely affected when soybean and sunflower were raisedas preceding crops. Different preceding crops have not shown any discernible effect on nutrient composition and chemical quality parameters in P, X and L leaf positions of tobacco. The cost -benefit ratio in groundnut - tobacco - water melon was higher than maize - tobacco - groundnut. Keeping in view the soil heath, sustainability of tobacco yields, cultivation of groundnut - tobacco -watermelon / groundnut was remunerative system in the region.
