Unbelievably, this is the final issue of Today's Anaesthetists 2009. How this year has flown by, perhaps time passes quicker during a recession. Or perhaps it is the suffocating volume of bureaucracy which engulfs all public sector workers that merely distracts us from mundane things like the passage of days and weeks.Though we all started 2009 as doctors registered with the General Medical Council, we end the year as something quite different. We are now all medical practitioners with a licence to practice, a licence that is not for life, and that requires re-issuing every five years. Initial indications are that this process will take the form of an enhanced appraisal with, yes you guessed it, yet more layers of bureaucracy and paper work.
