It was interesting to see kids being carried around and consoled by recovery staff. I soon realized the importance of volume control devices i.e. dummies and feeding bottles! Pain assessment and control are more challenging to say the least and Epidural infusions, Peripheral Nerve blocks and catheters, caudal infusions, NCA, PCA, Clonidine and Ketamine infusions are all used.Size does matter!Neonatal emergencies are extremely challenging and you learn to respect these kids for their potential to desaturate at amazing speed and realize that airway manoeuvres have to be much gentler than in adults. When subtle the equipment looks too big rather than too small. You know you're in for an exciting day when the 24G cannula looks more like a hosepipe in your patient. There is very little room for error in this group.
