THE Australian feedlot industry has broken a significant number of records as shown in the March 2005 quarter of the ALFA/MLA Feedlot Survey just released. These records reflect a number of milestones for the feedlot sector relative to the number of cattle on feed, the total feedlot capacity and the expected Japanese market turnoff. "These figures were not surprising given the international market demand for Australian beef in the wake of the BSE detections in North America and with the increasing areas of grazing land becoming drought affected in most Australian states and territories, producers are opting to finish store cattle through feedlots to preserve more feed for their breeders and replacement heifers," said Mr Sandy Maconochie, President of Alfa.
