A NEW through-chain management programme designed to help combat Bovine Respiratory Disease by starting the fight against the infection before cattle arrive at the feedlot has been developed through Elders. Current management practices used for control of BRD only begin after arrival at the feedlot. They typically include vaccination at induction. In the feeding pens, treatments include pulling and treating sick animals using appropriate antibiotics. Feedlot operators and their livestock suppliers can help reduce the stress factors associated with the first 40 days in the feedlot by completing a range of interventions on breeding property of origin, or backgrounding property.
