THE VALUE of steam-flaking in the finishing performance of the Barmount Station Feedlot in central Queensland has become a labour of love for Sean and Phil Conaghan since taking over the 50 year old property from their father about five years ago. Situated off the Old Bruce Highway at Marlborough, half-way between Rockhampton and Mackay, the feedlot is DPI licensed to 10,000 SCU, but currently caters for 7,000 head in dedicated pens for domestic and export markets and Wagyu. The 17,500-acre station holds the only privately-owned steam-flake yard on Queensland's central coast.
