摘要

The landmark AAHA study on compliance, published as The Path to High Quality Care in 2003, examined pet owners' roles and attitudes regarding compliance. That research concluded that there was nothing to suggest that the pet owner was a barrier to compliance. It also found that cost, or money, was essentially a non-issue when it came to owners making decisions about their pets' care. When that finding was presented to veterinary audiences, the reaction frequently suggested that veterinarians did notbelieve the conclusion that cost was not a barrier. "That's not true," was a common refrain. "It is about the money." As a follow-up to that study, we were interested in learning more about the communication that occurs between the pet owner and the veterinarian and other members of the practice team. One of the conclusions from our work on compliance was that the communication of a recommendation for care was the major element in determining whether or not the care was delivered.
