When you've practiced veterinary medicine as long as Hal Taylor, DVM, the symptoms of an ineffective team are easy to spot. "People on your staff don't get along and someone ends up quitting," says Taylor, owner of five AAHA-accredited practices in the Columbus, Ohio area. "Clients call with complaints, telling you, 'Hey, Doc, things aren't right over there.' If the problem gets bad enough, your morbidity and mortality rates can increase." Yet, even when the symptoms of poor performing teams become apparent, many owners are unable to pinpoint the source of the problem. They overlook a simple diagnostic tool that can be found in nearly every office.
