Those of us who make our living studying microorganisms often take their metabolic versatility for granted. However, we are remindede of this versatility yet again with the recent publication by Larimer et al. [1] on the complete genome sequence of Rhodopseudomonas palustris, a purple photosynthetic bacterium that is a member of the alpha group of proteobacteria.
