The Minnesota Area II Potato Growers 24th Annual Educational Workshop was held March 3rd in the Jack and Jim Event Center in Duelm, Minnesota. There were six speakers from the University of Minnesota (UMN) and North Dakota State University (NDSU).The first speaker was Dr. Susie Thompson, NDSU, who in her words would be going from "Hybridizing to the Release of a Variety." She mentioned some of the steps it takes to develop a potato variety in the Northern Plains. The goal of thepotato breeding program is releasing exceptional, multi-purpose cultivars that meet the needs of potato producers and the industry in North Dakota, Minnesota, the Northern Plains, and beyond. To achieve this 529 families were created, while 145 parentalgenotypes were used. Her seedling production was 112 families totaling 24,710 individual genotypes in the summer greenhouse crop. Fifty six families were evaluated via detached leaf assay for late blight resistance totaling about 5,600 genotypes. She evaluates on yield and grade components, specific gravity,chipping, french frying, bruise susceptibility and sucrose rating. Her screening and development trials are for bacterial ring rot, pink rot, Pythium leak, late blight, Fusariwn dry rot, Verticillium wilt, tuber blemish diseases, Colorado potato beetle,stress resistance, cold sweetening, sugar end, cultural management, herbicide tolerance, and requirements for Nitrogen and Potassium.
