The diet-borne Cu in minute concentrations are essential for vital functions in fish, whereas Cd is not essential for any vital activity. Fish diets can be contaminated by different metals. This study was conducted to assess the toxic effects of diets contaminated with Cu, Cd or their mixture on Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). It was recorded that the condition factor (K), hepatosomatic index (HSI) and gonadosomatic index (GSI) exhibited significant reduction in fish fed diet-borne Cu, Cd, and Cu+Cd. The total sarcoplasmic protein showed a slight reduction after 10 days of exposure to diet-borne metals, but significantly increased after 20 and 30 days. The total sarcoplasmic nitrogen content of O. niloticus also increased in affected fishes. The total plasma protein, albumin and globulin increased due to high dietary Cu or Cd or Cu+Cd intake. Fish fed with Cu contaminated diet for 10 days exhibited the disappearance of the last four sarcoplasmic protein fractions (sensitive proteins). Cd contaminated diet induced the disappearance of the ninth fraction of sarcoplasmic protein when fed to fishes for 10 days. Feeding Cu+Cd contaminated diet for 10 days caused the disappearance of the last sarcoplasmic protein fraction, though bands number 7 and 8 faintly appeared. It is concluded that fish diet contaminated with Cu, Cd or their mixture induce deleterious effects of fish body indices as well as sarcoplasmic protein pattern. Thus, high diet-borne intake of tested metals induce toxic effects on O. niloticus.
