The chemical composition of cooked dogwhelk (Thais cattifera) was studied. The moisture content of the sample was 67.50/100 g wet weight. Crude protein, crude fat, ash and carbohydrate contents were 56.4, 6.5, 12.6 and 24.5 g/100 g dry matter, respectively. Some toxic substances were determined: total oxalate was 1686 mg/100 g and the tannin content was 498.3 mg/100 g dry matter. Elemental analysis showed that T. cattifera is rich in sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium and phosphorus. Among the essential amino acids assayed, lysine, with a chemical score of 62.5%, appeared to be the most limiting as others had scores up to 149%, and 293.2%, all compared with the amino acid pattern of whole hen's egg. Dogwhelk is therefore a cheap source of animalnutrients.
