Biodeterioration of African breadfruit (Treculia africana) in South-eastern Nigeria and its control

Pods and seeds of Treculia africana from different locations in South-eastern Nigeria were microbiologically analysed. The microorganisms associated with the biodete-rioration of the pods were largely moulds: Aspergillus niger, Rhizopus stolonifer, Botryodiplodia theobromae, which accounted for 72% of all the microorganisms isolated. Erwinia spp. were the only bacteria species, and accounted for the remaining 28%. In contrast, no bacteria were isolated from the seeds, but some mould genera were isolated. Of the moulds Rhizopus stolonifer occurred in all locations and caused the highest degree of spoilage of dehulled and undehulled seeds. In one location, however, it accounted for only 45% of the total spoilage of undehulled seeds. High correlationswere found between the microorganisms from pods and from seeds. Storage at 5°C and prestorage treatment with 15% sodium chloride solution reduced spoilage from 100% to 0% and 5% respectively.
